4156: Advanced Topics on Macroeconomcis

This is an advanced topics on macroeconomics course, where we will study and reproduce some papers in the macroeconomics literature. Topics from growth, to empirical analysis of the labor market will be covered in the course. The course will alternate lectures on the basic theory of the topics, lectures analyzing the specific papers and recitations with student presentations on the homeworks assigned on the papers. Homeworks will include the reproduction of theoretical and empirical results of the papers.
The three main objectives of the course are that the student learns some advance topics in the field of macroeconomics through the analysis of some important papers, that he/she learns how to reproduce some of the results of these papers and that he/she acquires presentation skills. This is an advance topics course and knowledge of basic econometrics is required, hence students planning to take this course are required to have taken at least one econometrics course. Students are also required to have a good knowledge of English, since the classes ,the papers assigned in the course and the students presentation will be in English.

Special Topics: Japanese Culture Course of MBA at Hitotsubashi University

[Term 1] Special Topics: Japanese Culture (R. Davies) (2008/Term 1&2 (Fall&Winter))

Japanese Culture is an elective course for ICS students who are new to Japan, although it is required for scholarship students in the Young Leaders’ Program (YLP). Classes will be held mainly on Saturday mornings, and if necessary, occasional meetings may also be scheduled on Friday afternoons or weekday evenings, for a total of seven sessions.

This course was originally designed for YLP students, but recently, other international students at ICS have also been welcomed to participate. In addition, a small number of Japanese students are invited to take the course for credit each year. They act a valuable resource on Japanese culture for the other students and provide logistical support for the instructors.
Course Structure

Japanese Culture is a two-credit course which is field-oriented and designed to act as a bridge for non-Japanese students in adapting to their new life in Japan and at ICS. The first sessions are practical in orientation and provide participants with useful information and resources for everyday living in Tokyo, including transportation, shopping, cooking, restaurants, entertainment, and so forth. The sessions in the second half of the course endeavor to give students an experience of some of the more important and aspects of Japanese culture, presented by masters in fields such as traditional Japanese dance, the Tea Ceremony, and Zen meditation techniques.
Teaching Method

Reading materials for field sessions and other activities will be provided in advance. No further homework is required.

Microeconomics Course at Gadjah Mada University

Microeconomics I (EKU 1133)

Description

The course covers deeper topics on microeconomics concepts and analysis.

Topics

Theories of consumer choice, consumer and producer behavior, output and input markets.

Objectives

Develop a deeper understanding of microeconomics concepts and various problems solving using hypothetical and simple empirical cases.

Microeconomics II (EKU 2135)

Description

The course builds on microeconomics with special reference to the usage of assumptions in microeconomics.

Topics

Basic assumptions in microeconomics, research on microeconomics concepts.

Objectives

Teach students to formulate actual problems into simle microeconomics models and analyze using acquired theories.

Macroeconomics I (EKU 1134)

Description

The course covers deeper topics on macroeconomics concepts and analysis.

Topics

Applying theories to macroeconomics problems, quantitative analysis of macroeconomics, and qualitative analysis of macroeconomics.

Objectives

Provide students with practices in solving macroeconomics problems based on the teories acquired.

Macroeconomics II (EKU 2136)

Description

The course examines greater depth of macroeconomics theories, including advance macroeconomics theories.

Topics

Fundamentals of economic growth process supply and demand in open economics, theory of economics fluctuations, determinants to aggregate demands, general equilibrium of product, money, and unemployment.

Objectives

Enhance students’ ability perform macroeconomics analysis in order to learn advance macroeconomics phenomena.

Admission Requirement Part Time MBA at School of Business and Management (HKUST)

Admission Requirement

The HKUST MBA seeks to bring together a diverse group of participants with a variety of abilities, experiences and academic backgrounds. Applicants are expected to meet the following requirements: Strong bachelor degree:
Applicants for admission to the MBA program must possess a good bachelor’s degree (normally with Honors not lower than Second Class Lower Division or with an average grade of not lower than ‘B’) from a recognized university or approved institution

Minimum 3 year’s full-time work experience after the first degree:
Applicants’ previous work experience will play an important role in the overall assessment of their applications. Applicants are required to have at least 3 years of full-time work experience after obtaining their bachelor’s degree.

Satisfactory GMAT score or HKUST Aptitude Test:
In addition to possessing good scholastic records, all MBA program applicants are required to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT http://www.gmac.com).

Information about taking GMAT in China can be obtained from web site www.neea.edu.cn. Applicants are strongly advised to schedule the test well in advance of the test taking date (e.g. 3 months) to secure a booking.

Alternatively applicants may choose to sit for the HKUST aptitude test for the Shenzhen MBA program. The aptitude test will be in form of a GMAT diagnostic test, and applicants will be tested on their quantitative and verbal skill.

Take intake2008 for example, 4 training workshops were arranged on Sundays in May, 2008 and the test was scheduled on May 31, 2008 . The total fees for the 4 workshops, study material and the test was HKD 3,000.

A good TOEFL/IELTS result:
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English. Those with the following conditions could be exempted from TOEFL/IELTS test: - Whose first language is English; or
- Who attended undergraduate study with English as the language of instruction; or
- Alternatively, candidates can take HKUST English Test held in Shenzhen. The test includes 3 parts- Cloze Passage, Comprehension & Essay, similar with TOEFL; For intake 2008, the English test was in the afternoon of May31, 2008; The fee for English test was HKD500. )

In case of cancellation, applicants must notify us 10 days in advance in order to receive a full refund. Otherwise, refund percentage is listed below:
Cancellation 9 – 5 days prior to program commencement: 80% refund
Cancellation within 5 days prior to program commencement: 60% refund
Cancellation after program commencement: non-refundable
