The mission of the department is to be a leading intellectual center for management and organization research in the Asia-Pacific region. To this end it continues to recruit and retain the brightest minds from around the world. It provides its students with the necessary training and preparation for them to become responsible and responsive professionals. It also works with local business leaders to identify and address pressing management problems through research, consultation and involvement in community activities.

Recognizing its unique position in the region where the notion of East meets West is epitomized, the department adopts a two-pronged strategy to develop global business knowledge and also accentuate its edge in building local expertise. First, the department encourages and supports its faculty to pursue their diverse research interests. Second, the department also makes concerted efforts to develop its strength in research on management and organization in the Chinese context.

The department’s faculty members are renowned for high-quality, cutting-edge research, and have published their work in the best management journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ), the Administrative Science Quarterly (ASQ), the Academy of Management Review (AMR), the Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP), Organization Science (OS), and the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ).

The goal of the department’s PhD program is to develop outstanding scholars who are able to teach in major research universities in Asia and around the world, and who are able to become major contributors to the frontiers of management knowledge by publishing their work in the best management journals.

Our program provides solid training in the theory and methods of various fields of management such as human resource management and strategic management. Apart from rigorous course work, students gain hands-on experience in the research process through working with faculty members on research projects from the early stages of their study. Thus, the program offers students a highly stimulating learning environment and enables them to cultivate first-tier research skills to pursue academic excellence.

Economics

The Department of Economics emphasizes both teaching and research, and sees them as mutually reinforcing. Faculty members are encouraged to engage in important research that leads to publication in leading international journals. Faculty members are also encouraged to apply rigorous methodologies to local economic issues that are of high academic value.

The Department’s research effort is focused on four specific areas in addition to the common core of microeconomics and macroeconomics. They are (1) econometrics; (2) economic growth and development; (3) industrial organization and theory of the firm; (4) international economics; and (5) China’s Economy.

Faculty members in the Department are highly regarded and their accomplishments are formally recognized in several studies of productivity in economics research. In a study of East Asian universities published in Economic Inquiry (October 1999), HKUST was ranked number one in East Asia. In a study commissioned by the European Economic Association (2001), HKUST was ranked first in Asia and 37th in the world. In a study of publications in econometrics published in Econometric Theory (2003), HKUST was ranked 17th in the world for its publications in three core econometrics journals and 26th in all theoretical econometrics publications.

The Center for Economic Development was established in 1995 with support from the Department. Its goals are to support research on the process of economic development, with emphasis on economic development in Greater China and the Asia-Pacific region. Some of the department’s members are active in the School’s multidisciplinary Center for Experimental Business Research.

Procedure

In order to apply for admission to the IEMBA program, the following documents should be submitted to the “HKUST IEMBA Program Coordination Center”:

1. The completed Chinese and English application forms (please contact the IEMBA Co-ordination Centre for application form);
2. Two recommendation letters (one of the recommenders should be the Chief Executive of your organization, and the other should have senior academic or professional title);
3. A sponsoring organization recommendation letter;
4. Two copies of all degree certificates or diplomas of higher education;
5. Two business cards and two passport photos and
6. Acknowledgement cards.

Short-listed applicants will be asked to attend an interview before they can be admitted to the program. The admissions committee will assess the suitability of each applicant and make final decision on admission.

Early application is advisable, since enrollment is limited and qualified applicants are accepted on a first-come-first-served and suitability basis.

The task of International Exchange Dep (IED) is in charge of inviting foreign teachers and arrange their courses. Since 2002 which year EMBA program was established , having gained great achievement, IED invited quite a few foreign and overseas professors ,experts and scholars to give lectures to EMBA stuents gradually.

In addition, IED’s another work is to arrange all the students to visit abroad as well. Up to now , EMBA center of Business School of Nankai University has already organized students to visit USA, Canada, Korea, Europe, Austrilia,some other countries and areas. Furthermore, some global famous enterprises such as Volkswagen CocaCola, Mobil, as well as some well-known international reputation Universities, have been visited by EMBA students already. During the period of visiting abroad, EMBA students absorbed foreign advanced management experience ,broaden their horizons, renew their ideas and harvest rewarding experience.

MBA from Business School Nankai University

The MBA Center of Nankai University was founded in July 1997. It is the institution that is specially established for administrating and carrying out the MBA education of Nankai University. The MBA Center, affiliated in the Business School of Nankai University, executes the MBA programs under the guidance of the Graduate School of Nankai University. Professor Weian Li, the dean of Business School of Nankai University, is the director of the MBA Center with four departments. Department of teaching, department of employment guiding, department of administration, and the department of EMBA program. And it also has its own academic committee and the committee experts.

The MBA Center is a high-efficiency, conscientious and innovational team. It constantly improves itself to suit for the MBA education pattern in China and absorb the advanced management ideas and educational experience, integrating resources, enhancing the brand values, continually innovating and improving the MBA education environment. The MBA program of Nankai University is one of the top three MBA Programs in the first accreditation held by the Ministry of Education in 2002. The Organic Committee of the World Managers listed the most influential MBA of China ranks, and the MBA program of Nankai University is the fifth with the survey of 1,000 professional managers in 2003.

The MBA Center of Nankai University constantly pays more attention to the innovation and team spirit in MBA teaching and managing. And the MBA center opens the courses of Managerial Ethic, Career Development and Management, Strategy Management, and etc. at the initial stage.

The MBA Center is the first to set up the two-advisors system. That means every student can have two advisors: one is the university academic advisor and the other is the practitioner advisor who is from the external of the university. This does important contribution to the study of Chinese MBA education. The MBA Center of Nankai University encourages the MBA students to carry out self-management and to cultivate the team spirit and innovative spirit. Nowadays, team spirit has been a remarkable feature of the MBA program of Nankai University.

1. Based on the strong teaching and research faculty of RBS
As one of main bases of MBA education in China, RBS has strong teaching and research strength, a library with enormous books and complete specialized materials, advanced computer lab, multimedia network classrooms, a CAD lab, compact disc information searching center, and a video room.

2. Unique premium MBA curriculum
The MBA education at RBS is the embodiment of the research on management theory and corporate practice over half a century. It has drawn the quintessence from the contemporary European and American MBA education, which helped form an extractive curriculum with its own characteristics. Our MBA program is featured by “paying equal attention to both advanced topics and systematic courses, distinguished professors coupled with entrepreneurs, advanced western theory integrated with domestic experience, simulated training with interactive case discussion”. RBS faculty have collectively compiled 15 case study books, and published scores of MBA premium teaching materials in English through the China Machinery Press to meet requirements of MBA case study education. It has also intensified the assessment for teachers and has promptly informed them of feedback from students.

3. Advanced case study education focusing on the integration between theory and practice
In view of MBA’s orientation of practice, we focus on case study in education, intensifying students’ awareness of competition, risks, and decision-making and on-site management capabilities, and organizing them to visit and investigate into enterprises to keep them up to date with economic development in the world, and the reform and opening up of China.

4. Flexible BB On-Line Learning System
As the pioneer in developing on-line education management system in China, RBS has an internationally advanced Blackboard Learning System (BB). With its powerful functions such as on-line course registration, scoring, classroom discussion, learning material distribution, question answering by teachers, teaching affairs management, the BB system has provided a powerful on-line platform for interactions between teachers and students, and between students; and has substantially enhanced the teaching management efficiency.

5. The colorful secondary classroom
RBS has invited senior visiting scholars, the American Fulbright and other foreign teachers to participate in the MBA classroom teaching, and has invited managers of foreign transnational corporations in China and domestic enterprise managers and scholars to give lectures.

6. International exchange activities
RBS regularly send outstanding MBA students on exchange visits to schools in the U.S. A. and Europe. Since 2000, we have signed graduate exchange and study agreements with The University of Texas, San Antonio (the U.S.), the School of Business (EUROMED MARSEILLE Ecole De Management, France), and the School of Business (Aarhus School of Business, Danmark), and have regularly sent MBA students on exchange visits to the above-mentioned schools.
