Learning Outcomes : At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Relate basic concepts, approaches and statistical techniques relevant
to business, accounting, economics and management.
2. Acquire skills in presenting, evaluating and interpreting daily problems
in statistical form and proceed to solve these problems using the
approaches taught in the course.
3. Employ various statistical methods used in business and appreciate
the presence of variability in business decision making.
4. Demonstrate awareness and depth of understanding of statistical
reasoning in the context of business environment.
5. Select the appropriate statistical techniques covered will include, Ztests,
T-tests, F-tests, correlation and simple regression. One-sample
and two-sample tests will be covered in dealing with complex
problems.
6. Use the computer (e.g. MS Excel, SPSS & EVIEWS) for data analysis
work.
Synopsis of Course Contents : Topics that will be discussed include definition and uses of statistics,
presentation of descriptive data, concept of probability, discrete and
continuous random variables. Other topics that will be covered include
statistical inference mainly in sampling and hypothesis testing. Common
techniques such as chi-squared test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), linear
regression and correlation will also be discussed.

Final Examination : 50%

1. Explain the role of management accountants in providing relevant
information for management use in planning, control and decision
making.
2. Distinguish the elements of cost and appropriate accounting treatments
of the three basic elements of cost; namely material, labour and
overheads.
3. Apply the various costing methods, including variable costing and
absorption costing, in product and service costing and utilise
appropriate computer software to assist decision-making.
4. Apply the concept of activity-based costing in product and service
costing.
5. Evaluate motivational, behavioural and ethical issues in decision
making at operational level.
Synopsis of Course Contents : This course introduces the basic concepts, terminologies, principles and
methods of cost accounting at operational level. This includes introduction
of cost elements, basic cost accumulation techniques and various costing
methods, including contemporary approaches in arriving at the cost of
products produced or services rendered.

General Information
Asset valuation is the core skills of financial analysts and asset managers. This course covers fundamental asset valuation concepts and techniques in three major areas: equity valuation, fixed income securities and corporate finance. Equity valuaiton covers basic skills of risk and return analysis, the fundamental equity valuation concepts and different equity valution models. Fixed income securities examine the concepts of term structure, yield measures, duration, convexity, credit ratings and immunisation investment strategies. Corporate finance covers various corporate finance theories related to decision making of corporate managers.

1 Capstone Project
Throughout their course of studies in the China concentration, our full-time MBA students are required to form teams and solicit short-term ‘capstone’ projects with business organisations and enterprises in Hong Kong, China, and even throughout the region. Under the supervision and with the advice of the Faculty, students can integrate theories and technical knowledge gained in the classroom with their practical applications in real-world business environments. The capstone project is expected to begin in spring every year and will be completed by August as a graduation requirement. In previous years, HKU MBA students have successfully completed projects with Nike, Financial Times, Mercedes Benz, Samsung, Maxim’s Group, etc.

Course Exemption and Advanced Standing
‘Exemption and advanced standing of up to four courses may be granted if a candidate can produce evidence, such as transcript and course syllabus, that a course is equivalent in content to another course elsewhere for which a satisfactory grade has been obtained or is holding relevant professional qualifications. Unless explicit approval is given, no credits will be given for the exempted courses or advanced standing granted. Candidates will be required to take alternative courses in lieu of the exempted courses. Please contact the MBA Programme Management Office for details upon application.’

Managerial Economics
This half course focuses on the problem of business decisions through the extensive use of cases. You look at basic supply-demand theory and marginal analysis, the structure of decision problems, the impact of the market setting (i.e. competitive, oligopolistic or monopolistic structures) and strategic interactions among firms using game theory.

This course is structured around the most important financial decisions made at firm level in an uncertain environment. For examples: what capital structure to adopt (financing decision); how to value a firm or investment project (investment/valuation decision); how to raise capital in the equity market (IPO decision); what mechanisms to put in place to discipline manager and the largest shareholder (corporate governance decision); whether to return cash and how to return cash to investors (dividend/share repurchase decision); and whether a firm should engage in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activities and how to do an M&A right (M&A decision). This course exposes students to some of the most fundamental issues in corporate finance today as well as some of the most important advances in corporate finance of the last decade. It will offer students an opportunity to understand how the concepts and theories of corporate finance are applied in real world and generate lasting impact on firm values, a driving issue faced and constantly asked by CFOs and CEOs. This course will be taught using a case-oriented approach.
