General Information
Financial engineering is the design, development, and implementation of innovative financial products and of financial processes in the major market segments of currency, interest rates, equities, and commodities, for trading, investment, hedging, and risk management, using methods developed in finance, economics, mathematics, physics, and computational science. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, credit risk derivatives, insurance derivatives, exotic derivatives, volatility calibration, implementation of trading systems using Reuters, and advanced term structural models.

To provide a comprehensive analysis of the properties of options and futures and to offer a theoretical framework within which all derivatives can be valued and hedged. Topics covered: simple arbitrage relationships for forward and futures contracts, hedging and basis risk, stock index futures, swaps, trading strategies involving options, valuation of options using a binomial model and the Black-Scholes formula, stock indices, currencies and futures, and exotic options.

Jointly offered by the School of Business and the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering, this is a four-year, double-degree programme. The BBA(IS)/BEng(CS) programme aims to train information technology (IT) specialists and the managers of tomorrow by blending two strategic disciplines into a single programme for the bright and highly motivated. It provides both IT and essential business training to give students a unique edge in their quest for business success.

After successfully completing the first three years of study, students will be awarded a BBA(IS) degree. After an additional fourth year, they will obtain the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science [BEng(CS)] degree.

*Please note that the fourth year of this double-degree programme operates on a self-financing basis, and the fees are therefore slightly higher than the usual undergraduate fees. Those requiring financial assistance can apply for non-means tested loans, repayable at an interest rate to be determined by the Government.

In order to improve the educational quality of doctoral candidates and strengthen the standardized management of Ph. D educating program, Management Science and Engineering started its Ph. D program as the first-grade discipline in September 1990, which was approved by the Graduate School. This version of instruction program is amended according to years’ practice. This program is also applicable to such majors as project management, information management and E-commerce and logistics management etc.

III. Length of Schooling and Credits
Full time Ph. D candidates usually spend 3 or 4 years finishing their studies. They may get their degrees earlier but not less than two and a half years, or get their degrees later but not more than 6 years. The specific length of schooling will be decided by supervisor according to the student’s case. For those students who get direct entry into Ph.D study from master period, they usually spend 4 or 5 years finishing their studies.

IV. Requirements for Ph. D Candidates
1.The education of doctoral candidates will follow the policy of “supervisor in full charge”, and organize a direction group with the supervisor as the monitor. The direction group together is responsible for the education and evaluation of the doctoral candidates.

2.Interdisciplinary Courses
1 The cross first-grade-disciplinary courses refer to graduate courses which are not defined in Management Science and Engineering. The students who select these courses must attend the classes and take the final examination.
2 The selected cross-disciplinary courses should not be the same as or similar to the courses taken during the periods as master candidates.

3.Seminars
Seminars are of importance for cultivating the comprehensive ability and leading the candidates into the advanced research fields. Within the professional fields specified by the supervisor, the doctoral candidates should participate in the special research reports given by others or take classes. The candidates should then review the most recent research papers according to the special report or the content of the course, and compose a research report and give the report in public seminars. The candidates can get 6 credits from special seminars. The allocation of the credits is 2 credits for Methodology of Management Research, 2 for advanced courses in the profession and 2 for seminar.

The Business School of Hohai University was established in 1983. It is one of the earliest management and economical colleges in China. With over 20 years of development, the Business School has developed departments and institutes as follows: the Department of Management, the Department of Accounting, the Department of Finance, the Department of Marketing, the Department of Management Science and Information System, the Department of Engineering and Engineering Management, the Department of Economics, the Research Institute of Strategic Management, the Research Institute of Applied Economy, the Research Institute of Project Management, the Research Institute of Human Resource, the Research Institute of Water Conservancy Economy, the Research Institute of Assets Management, the Research Institute of Applied Management Science, the Educational Center for MBA, the Educational Center for Engineering Master, the Training Center, the Center for Experiment Management, the IT Training and Research Center of Hohai University and Maryland University, the Sino-American Hohai Dynasty International Business Administration Practice Base, and Hohai Management Consultancy Corporation of Jiangsu province.

The Business School has built up an integrated specialty system. In 2003, under the authoritative National Discipline Assessment held by the Ministry of Education of China, the first class discipline of Business Administration in the School ranked 14th amongst all Chinese Universities.

The Business School has 116 teachers, including 36 professors (11 doctoral supervisors) and 58 associate professors. Nearly 50 percent of the teachers have Doctor’s degrees.

Presently, the Business School has 159 doctoral candidates, 678 master’s degree candidates and 2,396 bachelor’s degree candidates. In order to meet the social needs of different levels, the School cultivates advanced economic managers morally, intellectually and physically with firm base of economic and administrative theories.

The Business School owns an office building of 6,800 m² with central air-condition system. It has an Experimental Management Center of 500m² and a college library of 300 m², which houses over 100,000 of specialty books.

Scientific research and management consultancy are always the focuses of the School. In the last 3 years, it has fulfilled more than 300 scientific research projects and received 30 million RMB scientific research expenditure allowances. It has published more than 800 scientific dissertations, over 50 works and teaching materials. It has also won more than 30 items of all kinds of scientific production awards
