The doctoral candidate must make a periodic conclusion on the progress of the dissertation preparation in the medium-term evaluation (a year or so after the dissertation prospectus), which will declare the finished work and period achievements as well as the difficulties and methods or thoughts about how to overcome these difficulties. At the same time, the published research papers should also be included in the medium-term report, accompanying the plan of research paper publication and the papers that will be published in the next period. The medium-term report must be submitted in written medium. The supervisor will give comments on the report, including comments on the finished work, the fulfillment of the planned work and expectation of the future plan.
In general, the evaluation group for the medium-term report should be the same as the direction group in charge of the dissertation prospectus. The evaluation group should make assessments on the periodic achievements of the dissertation preparation according to the medium-term report and the comments of the supervisor.
The dissertation progress report can be combined with the candidate’s seminar report or special research report.
6Pre-evaluation of Dissertation
The original edition of the dissertation audited by the supervisor should be handed in to three professors or scholars in the related research fields in other universities to experience “double-blind” pre-audit. Approved by more than 2 pre-auditors, the doctoral candidate can apply for the answer examination. Otherwise the paper should be revised for the next pre-evaluation.
Requirements for Publishing Research Papers
1 Before the dissertation defending, the doctoral candidate should have published at least three research papers on the designated periodic journals (the published papers must be closely related to the contents of the dissertation), among which at least two papers should have been published and one can be a notice of having been adopted. In these three papers, at least one paper should be published in the foreign periodic journals or the important domestic journals.
2 The affiliated organization of the author must be Huazhong University of Science & Technology in these published papers.
3 At the end of the third academic year, all the full-time doctoral candidates without special ascriptions and the college teachers must publish at least one research paper in the important international journals before the answer examination and the published paper must be closely related to the dissertation. If the candidate fails to meet this requirement, a research paper published on the designated important journal may also be acceptable, but the candidate can’t apply for the answer examination until the end of the fourth academic year.
