ICS , Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy
[Term 2] Intensive Writing (R. Davies) (2008/Term 1&2 (Fall&Winter))
Many of the classes that students take at ICS require a significant amount of writing in the form of term papers, reports, plans of action, and so forth. Intensive Writing is designed to provide students with support, instruction, and practice in completing these writing tasks.
During the Foundation Week, all students entering ICS are required to complete a writing assessment in order to identify those who are most in need of assistance in improving their writing skills in English (these students are required to take Intensive Writing; for others, participation is elective). Student writing samples will be assessed according to a multi-trait profile which provides diagnostic information along a spectrum of five categories: organization, language use and grammar, content, vocabulary, and mechanics. A detailed error analysis will also be conducted on the writing samples to determine specific areas that should be targeted for instruction. The lessons in this course are thus based on students’ writing needs, but will also address many other issues that are important in successfully completing coursework at ICS.
Course Structure
This course will meet once a week in four-hour sessions (2 x 2 hours: 13:30-15:30; 15:45-17:45) on Wednesday afternoons during Term 2.
The course is based on the premise that “you learn to write by writing,” so written assignments are an integral part of each and every class. Students will also be assigned longer writing assignments for homework every week, which will be corrected and evaluated in detail by their instructor.
The classes are structured in an integrated manner, with the content of the lessons linked to one another as much as possible. The focus of instruction will be both “top down” and “bottom up”; in other words, the emphasis will be on top-level organizational patterns and structures on the one hand, and sentence-level grammar and syntax on the other. In addition, various types of writing that are important for MBA students will be stressed, including summaries, paraphrases, critiques, and so forth.

International Operations Management (EKM 3302)
Managing manufacturing and service operations across political boundaries is a challenge for companies seeking a global presence. As companies shift their manufacturing facilities around the globe, it is important that students appreciate the potential advantage and pitfalls of manufacturing outside the country. Conducting business overseas requires responding to the vicissitudes of foreign markets such as cultural, language, economic, and political differences. This courses objectives are to gain an appreciation of the key ingredients for successful management of global operations, to develop an understanding of the reasons for the oft-observed lack of integration of a firm’s marketing and operations strategies and to learn an approach for combating this problem, to show how effective global operations can lower cost, increase flexibility, improve responsiveness to customer requirements, and provide a firm with a competitive advantage, and to develop students’ analytical and communication skills through the use of business cases.

Prior Educational Background
Applicants for admission to PhD programs must possess a good first degree from a recognized university or an approved institution. An applicant’s undergraduate background is not a precondition for admission. We encourage students outside business majors, such as science, engineering, arts and other areas to apply.
The Application Date
Admission to PhD programs is for the beginning of the fall semester. The Admissions Committee begins review applications from January. Applicants are urged to submit all application materials (including copies of GMAT and TOEFL scores) by early February. Applications submitted after this date will be considered only if spaces are available. As not every department will consider admission to the PhD programs for each year, applicants should check with individual departments before they apply. Applicants will be notified of the decisions no later than May.
The GMAT or the GRE
An applicant must demonstrate his/her capability for graduate studies by obtaining a satisfactory score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), or other equivalent means. The test score is not the primary deciding factor for admission to doctoral studies. However, applicants with a GMAT score below 600 must have a strong academic record and/or extensive experience in their chosen field to demonstrate their potential. Registration forms for the test may be obtained by writing to:
