Learning Outcomes : At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Describe the various types of financial instruments, roles and functions
of financial markets and relevant regulators in the country.
2. Identify the principles and basic techniques of managerial finance such
as time value of money, financial ratio analysis, capital structure, capital
budgeting and working capital management including their strengths
and weaknesses
3. Analyze factors that determine a company’s need for external financing,
be it debt or equity, and the determination of optimal capital structure.
4. Examine decisions that affect working capital management and their
impact on firm’s value
5. Evaluate tools needed for valuing investment projects, including
determination of the relevant cash flows and the appropriate discount
rate.
Synopsis of Course Contents : Throughout this course students will be exposed to various financial tools,
financial markets, financial theories and financial management techniques
that can be used to manage firm’s finance and financial decision more
effectively.
Assessment : Continuous Assessment: 40%
Final Examination : 60%

2. Identify the basic principles of macroeconomics such as the
relationship between economic sectors and the workings of the overall
economy using Malaysian examples
3. Explain how the government uses various policies such fiscal or
monetary in solving economic problems of the nation
4. Apply basic models of income determination for an open and closed
economy, and theories explaining the relationship between government
expenditure and taxes
5. Analyze macroeconomics concepts such as growth, unemployment,
inflation, and be able to explain the ways in which the federal
government and the central bank can influence the economy and the
markets through fiscal and monetary policies.
6. Determine the factors that affect government’s fiscal and monetary
policies as well as the differences between Classical and Keynesian
approaches
Synopsis of Course Contents : This course will expose students to macroeconomic issues and problems
and concepts of basic measurements and calculation of a country’s
economic progress. Students will also be exposed to basic models of
income determination for an open and closed economy, and theories
explaining the relationship between government expenditure and taxes.

Corporate Finance Course at Business School IUJ

Corporate Finance
The objective of this course is to provide a thorough introduction to the fundamental principles of asset valuation and financing in competitive financial markets. The course examines the important issues in corporate finance from a perspective of financial managers who need to make significant investment and financing decisions. We start with the NPV rule, which leads us to the valuation of debt and equity. We then investigate the efficient market hypothesis and examine the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the portfolio theories in such a market. We also learn to use the NPV rule to justify capital investment decisions. Option pricing will be the last step in our venture into the world of corporate finance. While this course is not designed to teach an abstract mathematical theory of modern financial economics, a basic theoretical understanding of various topics is essential to competent analysis and intellectual discussion. Furthermore, in examining issues in portfolio diversification, knowledge of basic statistics and spreadsheets will be essential and assumed. Prerequisite: Statistics. Co-requisite: Financial Accounting and/or Managerial Economics.

General Information
This course is structured based on some of the most commonly discussed and applied issues in mergers and aquisitions. It intends to offer the students an opportunity to study the M&A process, understand different ways of valuing a target, explore how different valuation implications affect potential deal structures, and find the driving forces behind the winning M&A strategies. Meanwile, it covers various aspects of the academic research on M&A.
Topics covered include, but not limited to, overview of M&A, M&A winning strategies, M&A process, valuation, synergies, M&A mechanics and implications, M&A theory and empirical evidence, corporate governance, ownership restructuing and etc. Case examples from varous industries and countries will be prominently discussed.

1 Capstone Project

Throughout their course of studies in the China concentration, our full-time MBA students are required to form teams and solicit short-term ‘capstone’ projects with business organisations and enterprises in Hong Kong, China, and even throughout the region. Under the supervision and with the advice of the Faculty, students can integrate theories and technical knowledge gained in the classroom with their practical applications in real-world business environments. The capstone project is expected to begin in spring every year and will be completed by August as a graduation requirement. In previous years, HKU MBA students have successfully completed projects with Nike, Financial Times, Mercedes Benz, Samsung, Maxim’s Group, etc.
