Synopsis of Course Contents : Issues in corporate governance and ethics are highly topical issues in
today’s world of business. Governance and ethical issues arise in almost
every aspect of corporate life and it is the responsibility of managers to
handle these issues. The objective of the course is to sensitise students
to these governance and ethical issues in organisations and to provide
them with techniques for analysing and resolving those issues. With
growing public concern about the roles of owners and managers and
issues concerning “stakeholder” participation, the course will discuss the
importance of responsible corporate behaviour and good corporate
governance.

Advanced Seminar E-Biz Course at Business School IUJ

Advanced Seminar I, II and III (E-Business Thesis Work)
The E-Biz program at IUJ gives lots of flexibility to the students in completing their thesis work, which is a requirement for graduation in the E-Biz program. Once students get familiar with the program, they will be asked to elect a thesis supervisor. Selecting the thesis topic is one of the most important things in the thesis project. It is expected that students will keep their career objectives in mind when electing a thesis topic, and supervising professor. Though students normally elect professors of E-Biz program as their supervisors, depending upon the career objective, technically they can elect any professor in GSIM as a supervisor.

Thesis work extending over the three terms, including summer time, allows students to do a project that would use their learning at E-Biz and get close cooperation from the supervising professor. A thesis project can produce, for example, a new business plan, a new business idea, a completely new technology, a strategic plan involving technologies, or a comprehensive industry analysis, or competitive strategy. The facilities available to the students, including unlimited access to E-Lab, and the close association with professors at both EBM and MBA program, including the industry experts, give a unique opportunity to produce a truly remarkable piece of work that would help in securing a very successful career after graduation. The three term thesis work accounts for 6 credit hours.

Corporate Finance Course at Business School IUJ

Corporate Finance
The objective of this course is to provide a thorough introduction to the fundamental principles of asset valuation and financing in competitive financial markets. The course examines the important issues in corporate finance from a perspective of financial managers who need to make significant investment and financing decisions. We start with the NPV rule, which leads us to the valuation of debt and equity. We then investigate the efficient market hypothesis and examine the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and the portfolio theories in such a market. We also learn to use the NPV rule to justify capital investment decisions. Option pricing will be the last step in our venture into the world of corporate finance. While this course is not designed to teach an abstract mathematical theory of modern financial economics, a basic theoretical understanding of various topics is essential to competent analysis and intellectual discussion. Furthermore, in examining issues in portfolio diversification, knowledge of basic statistics and spreadsheets will be essential and assumed. Prerequisite: Statistics. Co-requisite: Financial Accounting and/or Managerial Economics.

Knowledge Management Course of MBA at Hitotsubashi University

The objective of this course is to offer an overview of knowledge management through philosophy, academic articles, and case studies. Starting with the definition of knowledge, students will learn various aspects of knowledge creation and utilization and are expected to understand the theory of knowledge creation as well as the practical application of knowledge management.
Course Structure

The course starts with the definition of knowledge by such philosophers as Descartes, Nishida, and Plato. Next, classical organization theoretical works, such as those of Barnard, Simon, and Maslow will be discussed to see how organizational knowledge-creating theory is based on them, and how it differs from them. Then, the theory of organizational knowledge creation will be discussed, including various components such as ba, knowledge assets, leadership, and enablers.

The theoretical part is followed up by the study of case studies to learn how firms have built their knowledge-based business systems. Companies such as Suntory, Seven-Eleven, Eisai, Honda, NTT DoCoMo, and the U.S. Marines will be studied.

Students will also learn about theory building methodologies to construct their own theory. Finally, the application of knowledge creating theory to broader fields, such as regional or national knowledge creation, will be discussed.
Teaching Method

The theoretical part of the course will be conducted mostly through the use of lectures and the dialectic approach. The application part of the course, which deals with knowledge creation within companies, will be conducted mostly through the use of case studies and discussion, augmented by outside speakers representing the respective companies taken up in the case studies. Also, throughout the course, students are required to make presentations in small groups on what they have learned.

It explains the relevant three main models for the service marketing activities; service triangle, service marketing mix and gaps model from the service quality. With special reference to these models, students are expected to analytically investigate challenges faced by service firms and hence to be able to develop services marketing strategies and tactics for gaining competitive advantage. The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of decision-making processes performed by marketing managers in service firms. Students are expected to acquire basic knowledge to assist decision making related to: managing consumers’ expectations and perceptions; efforts of building consumer relationship and service recovery; efforts of collaborating strategies with design and service standards; efforts of developing service performance, service promises, and minimizing service gaps.
