Learning Outcomes : At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate their understanding of the basic human resource
management concepts by defining, describing and applying these
concepts.
2. Explain the principles and techniques of human resource management.
3. Analyse effective ways of dealing with problems in performance
appraisal, discipline, selection, and compensation administration.
4. Illustrate the development of HR systems for real-world situations.
5. Apply the HR laws for workers in Malaysian organisations, including
the Employment Act.
Course Synopsis This course introduces students to the concepts, principles and functions
involved in developing human resource systems. These systems include
staffing, training and development, performance appraisal, compensation
as well as benefits and services.

Final Examination : 50%

This course discusses all aspects of managing human resource as a primary source of sustainable competitive advantage. It provides an understanding of HRM concepts, methods, and techniques with particular focus on HRM functions as business partners in strategic decision-making process and its implementation. All functions of HRM such as planning, recruitment and selection, training and development, career management, performance appraisal, compensation management, HR audit are discussed from strategic and technical perspectives. Two primary learning objectives of this course are: (1) to provide participants with an in-depth knowledge of effective HRM concepts, methods, and techniques, and (2) to give an appreciation of learning the role of HRM in developing sustainable competitive advantage, especially in executing strategies and facilitating the process of change or organization transformation.

BBA in Faculty of Business and Economics at The University of Hong Kong

Bachelor of Business Administration [BBA] The BBA programme is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in finance, human resource management or marketing. It combines strong, functional training with intensive exposure to languages and computer applications, plus other sciences and social sciences. In the second year of the programme, students can choose to major in finance, human resource management or marketing. Students may also select a second major. The Finance major prepares students for careers as bankers, fund managers, investment consultants, and financial controllers. The courses required in the major combine the most up-to-date ideas pertaining to these areas with applications of the concepts within the Asia-Pacific context. The Human Resource Management major trains students to manage human resources in both profit and non-profit organisations. The courses are designed to prepare students to become members of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management. The Marketing major is designed to prepare students for careers in advertising, brand management, and marketing management in multinationals and local companies. The major is unique within Hong Kong in that it offers professional internship opportunities for students; and all graduating students participate in special training programmes in communication, professional image development and social etiquette, which give them a head start in becoming future leading marketers.

The goal of the department’s PhD program is to develop outstanding scholars who are able to teach in major research universities in Asia and around the world, and who are able to become major contributors to the frontiers of management knowledge by publishing their work in the best management journals.
