Political Economy of Economic Policy
General Information
This course studies the relationship between the state and the market economy, especially highlighting the costs and benefits of economic policy interventions. Topics include: the economic value of the rule of law, property rights and institutional change, promoting competition and regulating markets, rules versus discretion in monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policy, and regionalism versus federalism. Selected case materials based on historical and contemporary examples will be used in classroom discussions, including international examples with emphasis on Hong Kong, China and Asia.

The School of Management of Shenzhen University was established in June 1997, consisting of the Department of Management, the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Soft-science£¬and now it has expaned to 5 departments. They are Dept. of Business Management, Dept. of Human Resource Management, Dept of Information and System Management, Dept of Public Administration and Dept of Marketing.
The school has 83 faculty members, among whom, 17 are professors and 42 are associate professors. Presently, the school has 190 postgraduate students, 2631 full-time undergraduates, 125 international cooperation students and over 4000 part-time students.
The school is honored with one Guangdong provincial level key discipline¡ªPublic Administration, one branded major of Guangdong¡ªBusiness Administration, one provincial institute for humanity and social science¡ªThe Institute for contemporary Chinese politics and the first pilot approved by the Degree Committee of China’s State Council among local institutions¡ªthe MBA program. The goal of the school is trying to meet the needs of social development in the 21st century and efforts are being made to become one of China¡¯s top schools of management in both teaching and academic research.
Management Program at College of Management Guizhou University
The College of Guizhou University has the following undergraduate programs: Management of Human Resources, Industrial and Commercial Management, Tourism Management, Forestry Economic Management, Engineering Management, Administrative Management, Public Service Management, Labor and Social Security and Librarianship. The College also offers 5 Master’s programs in Agricultural Economic Management, Forestry Economic Management, Enterprise Management, Administrative Management and Social Security, and 1 specialized Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. The College has 1 provincial key disciplinary area (Agricultural and Forestry Economic Management), and 4 research institutions at university level, namely, Institute of Regional Economy, Research Center of Modern Management, Research Center of Public Polices and Research Center of the Development of Less-developed Areas. In 2004, the College undertook 5 research projects at the State level, 21 at the province-/ministry-level and 8 lateral ones, with a funding of 3.7 million RMB for research.
Presently, the College has an enrolment of 2,890 undergraduates and 551 postgraduates (of whom 425 are MBA students). The full-time teaching staff number 107, of whom 15 are full professors and 28 associate professors.
The College provides programs of education in a full range of disciplines with a rational structure at different levels. The College hopes to be authorized to confer PhD degree before 2006. Meanwhile, it will strive to promote the development of MA study on specialized subjects, trying to be qualified in operation and enrolment of MPA while quickening the development of the MBA program. At present, the application for being authorized to confer MPA degree has been assessed by the State Council Academic Degree Appraisal Committee.
The MPM Center of Nankai University
Nankai University is one of the first Universities to introduce and carry out the education of Project Management. The Master Education of Engineering Project Management in Nankai University is one of the first Master Educations on Engineering Project Management approved by the Office of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
In order to ensure the high-level education on project management engineering master, Nankai University has specially established a Master of Engineering Project Management Center in Nankai University (Master of Project Management, MPM Center), which is responsible for the overall project management, engineering master’s degree in education and work.
The Center is a specialized agency, linked with Business School of Nankai University, relying on its administration, teaching staff and teaching resources of the Business School, which provides a solid guarantee to train top-level senior modern project managers. Since July 2006, the Center has become the certification and training center for “The Master Education in IPMP”. At present, only eight Universities have been awarded this qualification in China.
Degree Office of the State Council authorized Nankai University as one of the first institutions applying EMBA program .
In 1919, upon the founding of Nankai University, the discipline of business administration was establish. Under the guidance of President Zhang Boling’s ideal to govern the country with art, strengthen it with science and enrich it with commerce, the Business School of Nankai University has developed into one of the first institutions to be approved to grant enterprise administration doctoral degree in China, a mobile postdoctoral center of business adiministration, and an institution authorized to grant doctoral degrees on primary disciplines of business administration. The major of enterprise administration has been selected as a key discipline in China.
Relying on Business School of Nankai University , EMBA center established Students Recruiting Dep, Teaching Management Dep, International Exchange Dep and Administration Dep, being in charge of students recruiting tests, teaching management, teacher construction and students communications. Combining with self-features , EMBA center learns from foreign EMBA advanced education experience positively and exerts itself to make use of itself ’s comprehensive courses merits . With the guidance of leaders of Nankai University and hard working of all staff EMBA of Nankai University has achieved great achievement, and good social reputation all over the society. In 2004 (the first time) and 2005, Nankai University won the fifth position in an evaluation of the foremost EMBA programs in Chinese market twice, and won the fourth position in an evaluation of the foremost EMBA programs in Chinese market in 2006.
“To make successful people more successful” is the faith of EMBA of Nankai University, and also the goal of EMBA center to struggle.
Sino-US School of International Management (SIM)
A Partnership between the University of Maryland-Robert H. Smith School of Business and the University of International Business and Economics.
The Sino-US School of International Management is an institution of advanced management formed through an agreement between the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), China, and the University of Maryland-Robert H. Smith School of Business, USA. Located on the main campus of UIBE, the Sino-US School of International Management absorbs the advantages and obtains the blessings of both the University of International Business and Economics and the University of Maryland. SIM has the official approval from both the Ministry of Education (NO. [2001] 60) and the Degree Granting Committee of the State Council (NO. [2001] 83). Students at UIBE are officially registered at the University of Maryland and, upon graduation, receive a University of Maryland EMBA diploma and a program completion certificate from UIBE.
Being one of China’s 30 experimental universities for EMBA education approved by the State Council Office of the Academic Degree Committee and the Ministry of Education, the EMBA Program of the School of Management is geared to the needs of high-level managers and executives in enterprises and government bodies with good education background and rich management experience. The EMBA Program aims to train the entrepreneurs and high-level professional managers with outstanding international strategic perspectives and overall decision-making and leadership ability.
Since the first class opened up in the second half of 2002, many entrepreneurs and top managers at home and abroad joined in the program. The participation of many private entrepreneurs features the program, constituting a valuable network of elites. The EMBA program is developing steadily and commits itself to building a platform for entrepreneurs and top managers for study, communication and interaction so as to train high-level management personnel with strategic perspectives that can meet the requirements and challenges of global competition.
Education in the EMBA program of the School of Management includes orientation, course learning, supervisor selecting, overseas study tour, and dissertation writing, etc. There are key courses and elective courses in the EMBA program. The supervisor is selected by a two-way system. And dissertations should be defended after anonymous review and evaluation. The key courses in the EMBA program include Corporate Strategy, Managerial Economics, Advanced Financial Management, Operations and Supply Chain Logistics Management, Organizational Behavior within Cross-cultural Context, Strategic Marketing, etc.
